Things suck now. Let's make them suck less.
As we face hardship today, us Zoomers have a unique opportunity to create something great.
Gen Z is in an interesting spot now.
We were all born between 1997 and 2012. We assumed growing up that we will have lives similar or better than those of our parents. We were told to pursue our dreams and that “anything is possible.“
But life had a different idea for us.
The lifestyles that we enjoyed during our childhoods are becoming increasingly unrealistic and impossible to reach. Despite being in our 20’s, we are still nowhere near being able to own our own homes. Hell, due to the rise of AI, many of us don’t even know if we’ll be able to have a job. To top it all off, the ever looming threat of climate change has all of us wondering if we even have a future to look forward to.
Currently, the Gen Z cultural vibe is one of apathy and doubt. Why should we work for and maintain the cold, unfeeling machine of the establishment that does not act in our interests and in many ways doesn’t even work?
Of course, we aren’t the first generation to have these kinds of problems. The millennials before us who graduated college in 2008 had worries of being able to ever afford to start families or buy houses. Our parents grew up during the Cold War, ever weary of the looming threat of nuclear war. Our grandparents dreaded the prospect of being drafted to fight and die in Vietnam. And their parents grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. Things turned out alright for them, right? They weren’t doomed, and neither are we.
The Great Depression of the 1930’s was a time of pervasive economic hardship, where a quarter of working Americans were unemployed and millions of Americans found themselves destitute and impoverished. Yet, Walt Disney still managed to take advantage of emerging technologies to create the wonders of his magical world. Despite so much misery, the emergence of movies and cartoons provided a relief to the disaffected masses and became a cornerstone of culture for the next 100 years. And Disney, the company founded by Walt Disney, is now a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.
Walt Disney was born in December of 1901, when electricity and automobiles were still relatively new and the first planes were just starting to take flight. He went on to create something that inspired generations for the past 100 years.
100 years later, I was born in 2000, when computers and cell phones were relatively new and the internet was just starting to take flight. Just like Walt Disney, I intend to create things that will inspire generations for the next 100 years.
Join me as we guide ourselves into a better tomorrow!
